How does the MXM Gallery work?

1. The First step is to get registered. Once you have done that, you'll be able to upload and download as many materials as you want!
2. Please follow the link and download the provided scene. Then add your material (THE TEST OBJECT ONLY) and render it. Finally, upload the .mxm through the provided form.
3. Please also read these instructions regarding the scene.

Materials are revised to ensure that other users receive fully functioning, quality materials.

  Why this scene?

We wanted to provide a material presentation scene where all materials could be tested and showcased. The scene is already calibrated and has been exclusively designed by Thomas Anagnostou to show the power and accuracy of Maxwell's materials without the interference of lighting effects.

For more technical details regarding the scene, please read the following document (PDF document)

Follow the instructions for uploading a material. These instructions are very important to keep the site tidy and clean and to make life easier for you, as a user. You are asked to comply with them and take into account that uploaded materials are subject to inspection and could be deleted without previous notification in the case any of the requirements not being met.

  Content, allowed formats & size

The uploaded content must contain the .mxm file and its corresponding textures, ior and r2 files (even if they already exist in the Maxwell materials database), and should not exceed 10 Mb (the system will not allow you to upload more).

In the case of large textures you should first make a low-res version of it in order to upload the material correctly, then if you wish you can insert a link for your own domain (you will see a field for it when you fill in the details), where users can download the high-res version.

If you decide to pack your contents in a single file, make sure it's a zip file so users from any OS can access it.

  Material names

Make sure that you check that the material name- so that importing it into Maxwell Studio works, and does not interfere with any existing materials.
Provide keywords/descriptions of your materials so that users can easily identify it.
Please remember that you should use descriptive, self explanatory names, avoiding confusing material names such as “white metal” or “preview”.

If you decide to pack your contents in a single file, make sure it's a zip file so users from any OS can access it.

  Material Preview

A fairly noiseless preview image in the Material Editor is needed. You can raise the quality changing the preview options (right click on the preview image), raising quality and/or bounces parameters. And if it takes a lot of time, you can even reduce preview's size to 50%.
The material preview is especially useful when using Material Browser to look for materials and other users will appreciate the effort.

Remember you can choose among the provided preview scenes or add your own.

Some materials will appear black, mainly those with SSS. In this case we recommend making the preview with RS1 engine, preview will come with a bit of noise anyway.

  Preview image

A fairly noiseless preview image of the scene provided is needed; you can get rid of the noise by letting your render cook for more time. Other users will appreciate the effort.

  Credits

Please also remember to use the template provided, and that the materials should always be originals created by you, don’t use any commercial textures or use maps from other users without permission. You are responsible for your materials, so please make a good use of the site.
We would all appreciate of course, that uploaded materials are of acceptable quality.

  Voting

We continually detect unfair behavior in your voting of the MXM materials on this website and would therefore like to remind you of the following rules:

  • Please do not create duplicate users to be able to rate up or down materials.
  • Please use your common sense and keep notions of ethics and fair play in mind: this is not a contest.
  • Vote materials objectively: do not just relentlessly rate down materials.

We don't want to act like policemen around here. You are all professionals, and the MXM Gallery is a free resource created for you and supported by you. Please keep this site friendly and healthy. Thank you.
